HOUR RUN

Under ideal weather circumstances, 40 folks turned out to test their endurance in the 2009 version of the hour run, which according to Ken Young may be the longest standing hour run in the country. Ages of participants in the three events ranged from 5 to 82. If the shorter races are indicative, the future bodes well for running in this area. Eight of the fourteen runners in the 400 meter event were 15 or under with Thomas Nolan, age 15, leading the way in 54.6. Megan Matthew, age 13, led the female contingent in 74.9. The Ciarbellinis, Coral, age 6, and Hunter, age 5, also made successful debuts in both the 400 and the mile. Arguably the star of the day was 11 year old Chloe Pigg, who blazed to a 5:38 mile, just holding off her dad. Connor Trump, age 10, ran a very respectable 6:25. He would also do very well in the hour run. In that event, the older folks took over. Todd Braje took first place, covering 10 miles, 750 yards. He was followed by the indomitable Z man 9 – 450. Ever improving Grendyl McTigert ran what may have been the race of her life, covering a record setting 8 – 1320. As mentioned above, Connor Trump circled the track for 7 – 200, holding off Mama Tanya, (7 – 100). Jurgen Giessel, age 72, completed his third event of the day, amassing 6 – 1100 and Ed Taylor, age 82, ground out 4 – 1320. It was good to see one time Willow Creeker Berit Meyer competing again. She covered a very respectable 6 -1650. Maybe she’ll forgo her business and get back to her true calling.

I first directed this race in 1979, 30 years ago. Here are some comparisons. In 1979, there were 31 finishers compared to this year’s 40. Then, 5 were under 15, now, 1. Only 2 runners were above 50 in 1979, compared to 20 in 2009. The median distance in 2009 was 6 – 1605, compared to 8 – 440 back then. Indeed 11 runners covered 9 miles or more back then. Two did so this year. And last but not least, the post race frivolity was much more pronounced back then, but only one runner has survived to run both races. A big thanks goes out to all who helped time the shorter races and to those who encouraged the hour runners, not including those who may have sneered. See y’all next year!
