It was the best of time. It was the worst of time. It was the same time, one hour (at least for most.) Thus unfolded the 39th running of the Hour Run held on the HSU Track. This event is the second most venerable of SRRC races. Despite a change in schedule and the threat of rain, 36 runners circled the track as many times as they could. Cumulatively, they covered more than 250 miles. One can only wonder how many miles have been logged over the years.
First, the preliminaries. Greg Goldsmith (1:04) eeked out a victory over Jeff Haag (1:04.1) in the 400 meter dash. Iron man (finished all events), Jorge Matias, clocked 1:11. He was followed by Iron woman Tasha Souza (1:17 who may be a force to be reckoned with in the women’s 40’s division, and Sarah Moxon 1:19.) The star of the day, however, was ten year old RJ Richard. He defeated all comers in the mile run, clocking an outstanding 5:52. He would later finish 4th in the Hour Run, logging 8 3/4 miles. Jeff Haag (6:02) took another second (not bad for a 50 year old); while the above mentioned Tasha ran a respectable 6:39. The indomitable Jurgen Giessel (age 73), sailed under the 8 oh barrier in 7:56.
Cody Thompson (10-1210) captured the hour run. He was followed by Reed Richard (10-264), Greg Goldsmith (9-200), and RJ. Mom Melanie Richard would also log a very respectable 7 ¾ miles. Allen Mathew (8-930 held off Yoshi Uemura (8-650) in the men’s 50-59 division; Chris Hamer (8-440) tied Tasha for 50’s and 40’s women’s honors, respectively. Grendyl McTigert wasn’t far behind as she captured the 30’s division with an 8-339. Dan Huddleston (7-1320) took the men’s 20-29 division; while Ken Young and Jurgen Giessel took the 60’s and 70’s division, respectively, each logging 6-1030. Portia Matheson 5 ¾ cruised to victory on the older ladies’ division.
Much thanks go to Yoshi who covered timing for the short events and to Yoon for photos and collecting results. Next year we’ll try to avoid scheduling conflicts and flying soccer balls and players as well. See y’all then.
