Directed by Lanore Bergenske <ldb20@humboldt.edu> or (707)834-0285

On May 1, 2010 the first I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Run/Walk took place in Fortuna, California. Women and girls ages 15 through those in their 70’s gathered at the River Lodge to hit the road at 9 AM in for their choice of a two-mile or five-mile race. There was a great diversity of talent ranging from serious runners to individuals who wanted to take that intentional step toward becoming more physically fit. Later that afternoon the runners and five other groups of I.N.S.P.I.R.E. challenge participants and their supporters entered the River Lodge for an Award Celebration Gala.

What is I.N.S.P.I.R.E? It is a community wide series of events that both challenge and encourage women and girls to step out and take that intentional step to fulfill a hope, dream or calling in life. The six areas of challenge included Essay Writing, Community Compassion Awards, Public Speaking, Music, Art and the Run/Walk. I.N.S.P.I.R.E. takes place in Humboldt County, a region of pristine beauty, but yet a locale that faces some significant challenges. I.N.S.P.I.R.E. is designed to be a “catalyst of hope” to encourage individuals to take that intentional step towards developing a skill, dream or calling in life.

Winners for the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Run/Walk event included: Christine Mateer who garnered a $300 first place award for the 5-mile run. Nochella Ozard won a second place and $200 for the 5-mile as well as Jennifer Hayes who captured third place and a $100 award. The winners of the two-mile run were a tie for first place with mother and daughter team, Dawnette and Katie Sweet. They were awarded gift certificates from Health Sport and The Body Works. Terry Hill was the third place winner of the two-mile run and won awards from Strehl’s shoes in Fortuna and the Adventure’s Edge in Eureka.

A Running Team award was given to the girl’s high school team from Fortuna High School. These young women won $300 for their school’s running program.

In addition each award winner was presented a crystal glass engraved trophy for their accomplishment.

I.N.S.P.I.R.E. was sponsored by the Hydesville Community Church. Along with the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. staff members of the Six Rivers Running Club were present and worked hard to help make the Run/Walk a success.

We hope you will join us for next year’s I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Run/Walk.

Sincerely,
