Fourth of July 5K Run

210 people registered, 209 finishers, and 224 popsicles! Thanks to all who participated! All the money raised at this event will go to the Humboldt Area Foundation/Katherine McCaughey Memorial Scholarship Fund. We raised $1,885.00 and SRRC board decided to make it an even $2,000.00!! Thanks SRRC board! Our running club does so much for the running community; it is really awesome to be a member of such a club!

All the help the morning of the run was just terrific! This event came together quickly and efficiently because there are so many people eager to help!

As always, James Washington did the background work with the City of Arcata for the permit, the course set up, and the numerous raffle prizes! Thanks to Sherry M., Forrest W., Gary T., Paul K., Harry K. for set up; Barbara E., Bob T., Margaret M., (and I know there were others) for registration; Jorie B. and Karen B. for raffle help; Sherry and the gals for finish line and results – so quick with those results! And Yoon K., for all the great pictures and the very timely posting of the results/pictures to the website.

Local businesses were generous, giving us a bunch of really wonderful raffle items. A big thank you to the Jogg’n Shoppe, Life Cycle, Safeway, Murphy’s Market, Natural Selection, and Arcata Yogurt Shop.

The course this year was a bit different from previous years; it followed the HDN high school cross country course. It utilized more of the trails, and had a great finish for great photos! It seemed fitting to use the high school cross country course since that was one of the activities that Katherine (Kat) McCaughey loved – running cross country. She ran track and cross country for Arcata High School from 1992 to 1996. Many of her workouts with the team took place at the Marsh. Her last race was 4^th of July 5K 1997 at the Marsh, 4 days later she was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Eureka while crossing the street.

This year’s winner of the Katherine McCaughey Memorial Scholarship is Arcata High graduate Kira Ferrell. Congratulations Kira – good luck in college and keep running!
