Patrick’s Point Run 1/22/11

“Saturday, January 23rd, was one of the nicest days of the month.” That is how I began last year’s results article, but this year was even nicer! Last year we had a huge crowd--this year was larger with sixty runners finishing the 5K and 61 completing the 10K. Those are the highest numbers of participants in the last decade. Best of all, everyone seemed to have a good time (not necessarily in the race, although I heard a lot of runners being complimented on their times), and I enjoyed the great camaraderie. I want to thank you all for making this such a great day!

There were some great times and races. The father-and-son team of Reed and RJ Richard finished one--two, with RJ taking the race with a great time of 17:19. Last year, Tyler Coley, the outstanding high school runner from McKinleyville High, ran 17:05. RJ is just 11 years old! Laura McNulty won the women’s race last year in 20:02. This year she was 5th overall with an outstanding time of 18:24. Kami Larripa was second again, but improved her time from last year, 21:26 to 20:53 this year.

Cody Thompson was 10K champion for the second year in a row, tying Jason Lewis, both timed in 35:30. Julia Frey (45:34) was about a minute and 28 years ahead of Chris Hamer (46:38) for first and second in the 10K.

I had a lot of help this year which made the event much more enjoyable for everyone. Gary Timek and Don Elwell timed the races, with Pam and Louis Goldsmith helping at the finish line. My wife, Jan, Marlene Allen, and Bill Daniel manned the registration table, which was a bigger job than usual with 20 more runners than last year. James Washington picked up all the equipment from the course, giving me more time to complete results before the SRRC party that afternoon. Jonnie Miller, a good friend who teaches with me, was the volunteer at the park entrance. She enjoyed seeing all of you again, especially the “nice man” at the end of the group (Bob Burger?). Ken Yanosko, one of the long-time club members, was at the first turn helping with traffic and course directions. Jessie Hunt, Humboldt Redwoods race director, was at the turn-off to the housing. Marlene Allen and Sharon Powers helped at the start, making sure everyone was there for the start of the race. Bill and Deb Laraby helped set up and clean up and were generally cheery all day. I want all of you to know how much you were appreciated!

The ranger you met as you passed the parking barricade was Jim Johnson. He is a volunteer for the park and wanted to work with us this year. He offered to take the parking job to make it easier for us. I hope everyone had the opportunity to say hello and enjoy his sense of humor. The Patrick’s Point rangers were very helpful this year and seem to enjoy the club using the park.

There were two nice surprises. The work on Palmer’s Point was partially completed, making the point look cleaner with nicer viewpoints. The lack of cars made the site much more scenic. There will be limited parking for this race next year to preserve the beautiful views and long, picturesque walks.

There are awards to pick up at the Jogg’N Shoppe from the race and the party. The following people should see Mike Williams to pick up their awards as soon as possible. There are still some from last year. Mike needs to clear these from his store, so please pick up your awards right away:

The circuit looks very interesting already this year. What a start to the 25-29 male division! Four of the top six finishers in the 10K are in this division. Jason Lewis promised to join the club this year, joining Josh Tyhurst (4th), Daniel Huddleston (5th) and Clayton Broman (6th). Quite a few of our circuit regulars have moved to a new division. Bob Thompson (60), Dale Bagley (50), Ken Bell (60), Rick Park (65), Robert Meyer (65), Diqui Lapenta (45), Chris Hamer (55-sorry Chris), Chris Metzger (55), Paul Kraus (50), and Jason Barr (40) should make their new categories more interesting. The results will be added to the circuit in February and the new circuit results will be in the March newsletter.
