PATRICK’S POINT RUN
JANUARY
19, 2008

In one of the biggest
Patrick’s Point races in recent history, 90 runners finished the race on a
beautiful day in Patrick’s Point State Park. The conditions were beautiful and
there were some great races. Nick
Caplant (17:06), Reed Elmore (17:25),
Eric Tibbetts (17:26) and Jason Lewis (17:26) all ran within 20
seconds of each other for the first four places in the men’s 5K. Naomi Posh ran a terrific 19:53 to win
with a big margin. The Master’s winners were Yoshi Uemura (19:36) and Sharon
Powers (22:41).
The 10K was even
faster. Chris Binschus made a return
to an SRRC race to win a terrific race with a time of 34:27. Eric Malain was right behind him in
34:29. Steve Kilroy ran 34: 42 for
third and Ian MacDougall was fifth
in 34:56. Breaking up the top group was the Master’s winner, 41-year-old Scott Pesch, who ran 34:46, putting the
top five runners under 35 minutes. Megan
Roland placed 13th overall and was the women’s winner with a time of 41:39.
That time would have made her the women’s winner last year with a 6th place
finish. In 2006 she would have been the overall winner. Not far behind was Rachele Gundlach (44:02), improving her
time from last year, and Grendyl
McTigert (44:47). The Master’s winner was Chris Hamer in 45:24.
I had a tough time
putting things together race day because of a bad back, so I had to ask for
extra help. David Howell came out
very early and helped me unload and put the course together. Without that help,
this race would not have run well at all. My wife, Jan, along with Barbara
Edwards, did their usual great job with registration. Mark Ellis was the man helping people go the right direction at the
chute and he timed. Mary Wells, Bill Daniel and Jim Griggs were the encouraging voices on the race course. Karen Kelley-Day and Portia Matheson helped where needed,
and I thought I saw Marlene Allen
bring in some goodies, but I don’t think I got any. Her goodies are always
great. As we were packing up, getting ready to pick up all the mile markers, a
car rolled in with a woman trying to catch our attention before we left. To our
surprise, a new club member, Crescent City’s Debbie Weist, had run around and picked up the markers, without
being encouraged. I want to thank her as well. I’m sorry if I missed anyone,
and I appreciate all those who helped and had encouraging words after the race.
The 2008 circuit is now
under way. Jurgen Giessel, John Zinselmeir, and Yoshi Uemura are already in place to
win their eighth in a row. Rachele
Gundlach is back and hopefully will get her first circuit win in the 30-34
age group. Reed Elmore, at 38, is
running great and it would be nice to see him finish the circuit this year. Jen Foesig is leading the 35-39
division, but Jessie Hunt is racing
again, making this an interesting division. Scott Pesch looks very good and will be hoping to repeat as circuit
champ. Diqui Lapenta is leading the
40-44 division and this may be her year to win. Jeff Haag may be back for another championship, but he will have to
deal with Greg Goldsmith and 2-time
circuit winner Dale Bagley. Sharon Powers looks like she will be
back for a second circuit championship. The busiest division in the circuit,
the 50-54 women’s division, is packed, with 6-time winner Chris Hamer, former winners, Wendy
Pearcy and Marlene Allen, as
well as Sherry Myers, Kathleen Lake, Debbie Stamper, Gayle
Patrice, and Cindy Timek, who
all run many races. Bob Thompson, a
2-time winner, will be looking for a win, but must compete against Bruce McLean in the men’s 55-59
division. Karen Kelley-Day is hoping
to be a 5-time winner this year. Portia
Matheson has won five circuits in a row and has moved into the 60-64
division, winning her first race. Ron
Ross started off this year with a win in the 65-69 division. He will have
competition with Ken Young, EJ Royer, and Ken Yanosko. Bob Burger
is back in the 75-79 men’s division. He will be looking for his third circuit
win.
We hope you’ll get involved
in the circuit and our club races as much as possible. It will be another great
year of racing. There are few rules. You must be a 2008 SRRC club member,
finish six SRRC races during the year that are at least three miles long. The
next race is the Sequoia Park Run on February 23. I hope you’ll be there.
