5-mile Course Record Broken at Waterfront Run!

 

Eureka, CA – 340 people signed up to brave a soggy Sunday morning when 21-year old Shawn Stephens-Whale broke the 5-mile Waterfront Run course record. Shaving off 32 seconds, Shawn crossed the finish line in 27 minutes and 21 seconds. The previous record stood for two years by Todd Braje at 27:53:04.

          25-year old Jenna Lee was the first woman at 35:50. Other winners were in the Master’s race, Reed Richard in 29:14 and Melanie Reed in 37:58. The 5-mile course begins and ends at Eureka Natural Foods traveling along Waterfront Drive and coastal paths with the turnaround at the Samoa Bridge boat ramp.

          In the 2-mile race, 17-year old Jared Hilligoss won in 12:01. First woman was 14-year old Sara Davis in 13:01. The Master’s winners were Denise Walker-Brown in 14:06 and Rick Park in 15:52. The 2-mile course parallels the 5-five course with the turnaround at the Wharfinger Building.

          In the 2-mile School Team event, Redwood Coast Montessori, from Eureka, won.

          Proceeds from the event benefit a youth running shoe fund that gives away shoes each winter. Funds from last year’s race were matched by Six Rivers Running Club and redeemed at a discount at The Jogg’N Shoppe, allowing 83 student runners to receive new shoes. Look for running shoe scholarships at local schools next January.

          The Waterfront Run is held on the third Sunday of May and in 2012 it will be on May 20th. Photographs and results are posted at www.6rrc.com.
