Thanks to everyone who made the Blue Lake
Fish Hatchery Run a big success … and a lot of fun! As the race director, I don’t
usually run this race – I ran it in 1997, then took over as race director in
1998 and have been the director ever since. (I was out of town in 2002 so Yoshi
took over for me as race director for that one).
This year no one was going to let me get
away with “race directing”, there was too much hype brewing about the big run
off between myself and Berit Meyer for the women’s 50-54
division in the SRRC circuit! Yeah, two 50+ gals going for the win at a
blistering 8 min pace – that’s gotta be exciting!

for all the help with the race.
I was actually a bit nervous, worrying about warming up, tying my shoelaces
just so, gloves or no gloves, hat or no hat, running to the bathroom one more
time, all those things that ‘real runners’
think about before the big event.
Berit and I
had already discussed strategies with each other days before this race, so we
knew each other’s plan – I like to go out on pace and stay even, Berit likes a little bit slower start and then work up to a
strong finish. She had revealed her strategy at the Turkey Trot 5K, letting me
set the pace, staying within striking distance, and then coming from behind in
the last 100 meters to edge me out at the finish with her long stride. I wasn’t
sure how this was going to work out, knowing each other’s strategies.
Last minute instructions from my
‘coaches’ included “go out hard, and don’t look back”, “absolutely no talking –
to anyone”, and the best one “I want to see vomiting at the finish”. As Berit and I toed up to the line, I decided that I better
try the go out hard strategy. All the way to the 2 mile turn around I could
hear Berit’s foot strikes right behind me. Someone
yelled ”good job Marlene”, and 1 sec, 2 sec, 3 sec, “good job Berit” – dang! She’s still with me! At 2 ½ miles there was
a truck and horse trailer blocking the entire road, forcing both of us to skirt
up a driveway to get around. I did not look back. At 3 ½ miles I saw the hill
approaching, I wanted to slow down but remembered that Berit’s
strategy was to push hard at the end. She was expecting that I would slow on
the hill. I looked at the hill and realized I had to kick now, not wait for the
downhill into the finish, or she would surely get me with that stride. At the
top of the hill I thought about vomiting for a second, but there was no time, I
had to get down that hill to the finish. I heard someone say “good Job Marlene”
and then 1 sec, 2 sec, 3 sec, 4 sec, … 5 sec “good job
Berit” - yea! I might have her! I crossed the line at
31:59 just seconds ahead of Berit at 32:12. Then we
celebrated with coffee and cupcakes. I got her this time, she’ll probably get
me at the next event, you never know. But now that I think of it, I move to
another (even older) division in 2012!
The cake raffle, which we have been
doing since 1998, was a wild success, (for those who won anyway) – thanks to Margaret,
Nancy, Deb, Caroline
Carson, Jorie Brundy,
and Tanya
Trump for the raffle cakes and goodies!
P.S.
in 1998 we had 10 runners in the 2 mile and 12 runners in the 4 mile. Run Wild
Humboldt!
